Clutch

Clutches wear out! In fact it's common for a clutch to be replaced before a car reaches the end of its lifespan. That's because clutches experience a certain amount of wear and tear in the normal course of use. Clutch failure can result at any time and symptoms may include slipping, complete mechanical failure, noise, cable failure or hydraulic failure.

At SRC Automotiv the aim is to diagnose any clutch fault quickly and efficiently but sometimes this can only be achieved by removal of the gearbox.

Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)

Another thing to bear in mind is that many modern vehicles are fitted with a dual mass flywheel.

DMFs have the ability to move slightly allowing for a smooth take up of drive on release of the clutch pedal. A dual mass flywheel has a tolerance of about 10-15mm of movement between the two sections. Any more and the DMF is deemed to be worn to excess. If a DMF wears to excess it can become noisey as the two sections rattle.
